Spotlight on Peter Balaskas: A Renaissance Man in Literature and Theatre

Introduction

Peter Balaskas is a true Renaissance man, having explored a diverse array of professions before finding his niche in the literary and theatrical world. His journey began with roles such as a microfilm clerk, environmental and pharmaceutical chemist, theatre actor, and freelance news camera operator. He even served as an NBC Page for The Tonight Show and worked as a camera technician for NBC/Universal Studios. From 2004 to 2009, Peter was the Owner/Managing Editor of Ex Machina Press, LLC, where he nurtured the publication Silent Voices: A Creative Mosaic Of Fiction.


Literary Influences

Peter's literary influences include iconic figures like Ray Bradbury, Richard Matheson, Harlan Ellison, Edgar Allen Poe, and Rod Serling. His theatrical inspirations feature Eugene O'Neil, Anton Chekhov, Neil Simon, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Donald Margulies, David Mamet, Brian Friel, and Shakespeare.


Notable Works

Peter's fiction and poetry have gained international recognition. His gothic horror novella, "The Chameleon's Addiction," was a semi-finalist in the 2004 Glacier Press Writing Contest and is now published in Bardic Tales and Sage Advice, Volume Two. His short novel, "The Grandmaster," a supernatural thriller set during the Holocaust, won the 2007 Best Science Fiction Novel award at the Hollywood and New England Book Festivals. His short story collection, "In Our House," nominated for the Pushcart Prize, is also published by Bards and Sages. His short story, "Chamber Music," won the 2012 Best Short Story award from the Electronic Publishing Industry Coalition (EPIC).


Playwriting Success

Peter's transition into playwriting has been marked by notable successes. His short play, "Call These Delicate Creatures Ours, and Not Their Appetites," was a finalist at Theatre Odyssey's Eleventh Annual Ten-minute Play Festival. Another short play, "Confessions at the Avenue P Barber Shop," was a finalist at the Weathervane Playhouse's 8X10 Theatrefest. His play, "The Boulder of Sisyphus Rolls Over Me Yet Again," also known as "The 12 Dates of Christmas," was a finalist at the TheatreOne Play Festival and voted "Best Play/Audience Favorite." This success led to an increase in his playwriting output, with seven full-length plays and twenty-five short plays to his name.


In February 2019, Peter's full-length play, "Out of the Mouths of Poets," was produced by Lab Theater Project in Tampa, resulting in several sold-out shows and a nomination for Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay 2019 in the Playwright Category. His short play, "From the Membrane of the Nucleus," debuted at The Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays in Canada and was nominated in all festival award categories, winning Best Actor. This play was livestreamed on Facebook and is now available on YouTube.


Magazine Contributions

Peter has also contributed as a freelance magazine writer for publications such as Montage Magazine, Newport Beach Magazine, Bespoke Magazine, Laguna Beach Magazine, and LA Splash Magazine. Now residing in Florida, Peter continues to work in his dream job, serving as a creative lens for his stories, truly living in paradise.
